Report: Arsenal now considering breaking transfer record to sign 'exceptional' forward on deadline day
Arsenal are still looking to bring in a new striker as deadline day gets underway today, and according to The Mirror, the Gunners have not quite thrown the towel in on a potential deal for Alexander Isak.
The Swedish star has emerged as a viable alternative for Arsenal after they missed out on Dusan Vlahovic. The big Serbian ace signed for Juventus, despite Arsenal tracking him all winter.
However, things haven’t quite finished yet for the Gunners when it comes to this window. The Mirror claims that the Gunners are still weighing up a move for Isak. Despite being unable to negotiate a drop in his reported £75m release-clause at Real Sociedad, it’s reported that interest from AC Milan might have kicked Edu and Arsenal into gear.
The club are said to be actively weighing up whether to pay the £75m now, rather than risk losing out on Isak in the summer as they have done with Vlahovic. Certainly, this could be a case of lesson learnt for the Gunners.
Lauded as ‘exceptional’ by Gary Lineker after one Euro 2020 display last summer, Isak hit 17 La Liga goals last term but has managed just the four this season.
TBR’s View: Go Big Or Go Home For Arsenal
That’s the way it’s looking here for the Gunners when it comes to Alexander Isak. A player who is clearly a huge talent, but might not be the number nine type striker they were looking for.
However, they need a forward. Whether they pay £75m for said forward is another matter, but Isak certainly ticks boxes, albeit not quite as many as a Vlahovic would.
Isak is capable down the middle but can also drift wide if needed. Arsenal have had plenty of those players in recent years. A deal would also smash their transfer record which stands at the £72m paid for Nicolas Pepe.
