Arsenal cannot afford to get Ousmane Dembele signing wrong

Arsenal are being linked with a move to bring Ousmane Dembele to the Premier League but it’s a transfer Mikel Arteta would need to carefully consider.

According to a report from Spanish outlet AS (via the Sun), the Gunners are keen on landing Dembele. Along with Liverpool, it is believed that the 22-year-old is of interest to the London outfit.

Dembele has struggled massively since sealing a mega-money move to Barcelona from Dortmund.

He managed just eight goals last season in a free-scoring Barca side and has hit the net just once this term. Dembele has, in fairness to this season, missed a big spell through injury.

However, in a team that scores well in excess of 100 goals each season, those numbers simply aren’t good enough.

And it’s those stats that should set the alarm bells ringing at Arsenal.

Dembele comes with high risk for a high price

Given that Barcelona paid around £100m for the French attacker, they won’t be selling him on the cheap.

Indeed, the report from AS claims somewhere in the region of £70m would seal the deal.

Given Arsenal’s record signing was Nicolas Pepe at around £72m (transfermarkt), the Gunners would surely need to be 100% sold on what they were getting for their money.

Frankly, given Demebele’s record in Spain, there’d be serious question marks raised.

Where would Dembele fit at Arsenal?

The other question around the signing of Dembele would be exactly where he fits in the Gunners XI.

The aforementioned Pepe has finally started to get into his groove. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang occupies the main striking position while Gabriel Martinelli should continue to see more game time.

It could lead to a situation where, once again, Dembele is sat left on the bench. Dembele started 20 of his 29 La Liga games last season. He also played just minor roles in big games, coming off the bench for a matter of minutes in big Champions League games against the likes of Man United, Liverpool, and Lyon.

With Arsenal needing to get their next big signings spot on, there just seems to be too much risk around landing Dembele for such a big fee.
