Bruno Fernandes is reportedly a summer transfer target for Arsenal, according to Sport Witness. They have cited a piece in Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, who have broken the news of the Gunners’ interest.
Boss Unai Emery is set to go on a rebuilding mission this summer. Having only made minor adjustments to his squad last summer, it looks set to be a more substantial process this time around.
Several players could depart the Emirates Stadium during the close season, according to The Mirror, including Mesut Ozil who has fallen somewhat out of favour under Emery.
On that basis, Fernandes would represent a sound long-term replacement for the German.
The Sporting Lisbon captain has been in sensational form this season. In 48 games in all competitions, he has netted 28 goals and contributed 15 assists.
Ozil’s time in English football has been littered with inconsistencies. For all of his ability, the Gunners have just seen it all too infrequently for him to be considered one of the club’s true greats.
According to Sport Witness, Fernandes has a minimum fee release clause of £86 million. Although it is thought that anything upwards of £30 million is likely to be accepted by the Portuguese giants.
Ozil earns £350k-a-week (Spotrac) at the Emirates Stadium and the sooner they have him off the wage budget the better.
Fernandes won’t cost anywhere near that much in terms of salary, whilst his ability indicates that he could become a very shrewd investment.
