Arsenal and Porto broke a Champions League record this season in their last-16 clash in Portugal last night.

The Gunners have it all to do in the second leg on March 12 after suffering a 1-0 defeat on Wednesday evening.

Arsenal were denied what would have been a decent result as Galeno netted with a superb strike from range in the 94th minute.

While chances were few and far between for both sides, it was a fiery clash at the Estadio do Dragao.

And according to TNT Sports, the game saw the most fouls committed in any Champions League game this season.

During last night’s game, there were a total of 36 fouls committed between both sides.

This stands as a record in the competition this season and is just six behind the all-time record.

Due to all the stoppages, the ball was only in play for a total of 50 minutes.

It certainly wasn’t an ideal evening for Arsenal as they struggled to break down a resilient Porto side.

But surprisingly, the Gunners committed more fouls than Porto on the night, with Arteta’s men winning just 14 of the 36.

This surely wouldn’t have helped Arsenal find any rhythm in the game and Arteta will be looking for an improved display in the second leg.

While his side dominated the ball last night, they barely threatened Porto, barring a couple of half chances from set-pieces.

Arsenal had been in exceptional form heading into last night’s clash but were just slightly off the pace with their passing and decision-making in the final third.

Nevertheless, they certainly have the quality to overturn a 1-0 deficit in north London.
