Mikel Arteta has potentially hinted that Thomas Partey may get the chance to make his full debut for Arsenal on Thursday, with the Gunners boss claiming – in comments reported by Football London – that the summer signing is ready to start.
Arsenal fans got their first glimpse of the £45 million arrival at the weekend (fee reported by Sky Sports). The midfielder came on for the final minutes of their clash with Manchester City.
And ahead of Thursday’s Europa League group-stage opener with Rapid Vienna, Arteta has seemingly suggested that Partey is in contention to feature from the off in Austria.
“He has reacted really well. I think he came on and looked strong, looked confident and he added something positive to the team. It was a very short turnaround from him,” he said, as reported by Football London, when asked how Partey had reacted to his debut.
“Since he joined he had a day, a day and a half only in training. He has done a few more training sessions and he looks ready to start.”
Partey starting arguably looks a little more likely after the club’s injury update earlier in the day.
Arsenal confirmed on their official website that Dani Ceballos has not travelled with the rest of the squad.
That means there will definitely be at least one change in the middle of the park. And a clash with Rapid Vienna may arguably offer a good opportunity for Partey to make that first start.
Arsenal face a gruelling run of games leading up to the next international break. So they would certainly benefit from having the Ghana international up to speed as soon as possible.
