Arsenal bid for Navas continues Emery’s odd relationship with summer signing Leno

Arsenal have made a bid to sign Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas in the January transfer window, according to Spanish outlet Sport.

They report that the arrival of former Chelsea stopper Thibaut Courtois at the Bernabeu has shunted Navas down the pecking order and led to a deluge of offers coming his way.

Arsenal is apparently the most intriguing and they are ready to spend 16 million euros (£14.4m) to beat off competition from Roma to secure the goalkeeper’s services this month.

But Emery has already signed one goalkeeper in his brief Arsenal reign so far, Bernd Leno, but his treatment of the German suggests he is not fully convinced by him yet.

Leno was forced to wait for his Arsenal debut, as Emery persisted with Petr Cech between the sticks, even as it became increasingly clear that the former Chelsea man was not comfortable at all with the Gunners’ passing style and was waning in shot-stopping terms.

That cannot have done much for his confidence and Emery’s determination to spend again on an experienced international goalkeeper is another sign that Leno has not earned his manager’s trust.

That does not particularly make much sense considering Leno was brought in under Emery’s watch and the situation is one to watch as the month wears on.
