Mikel Arteta praises Martin Odegaard ahead of Leeds United clash this weekend

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, has been speaking about the club’s upcoming fixture against Leeds and has lavished praise on Norwegian midfielder Martin Odegaard ahead of the clash.

The Gunners boss was speaking about a manner of different issues at his pre-match presser today. Among them, were the obvious questions on Covid, as well as the situation with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The striker was left out last week, and will once again be missing against Leeds.

But when pressed on who might replace the Gabon star as skipper, Arteta spoke highly of Martin Odegaard, who is one of the names being touted to take over the mantle.

He’s very, very young but he’s already had a lot of experience in different clubs, in international football. I agree that in the last few weeks he’s getting very close to his best level. The ceiling for him, I don’t know where it is, with the talent that he has, the desire that he has, how much he wants to always improve and get better. We’ve got a tremendous player there,” Arteta said.

“He is a natural leader. If you look for the perfect professional, he wouldn’t be very far from that.”

Odegaard has scored three goals in his last four games. Since signing from Real Madrid, he’s settled into being a key part of Arteta’s squad.

The Norwegian is a player who has always had the required quality. At the end of the day, you don’t sign for Madrid at 16 if you’re not considered a top talent.

Now, though, we are really beginning to see the signs that Odegaard is a quality operator. He’s scored crucial goals and seems to be exerting more influence over proceedings in north London.

On the surface, he might not appear ‘captain material’. But as Arteta says, he has plenty going for him and is rightly in Arteta’s thoughts when it comes to this situation.
