Arsenal signing £72m-rated star could make 2017 Arsene Wenger decision look foolish

Moussa Dembele was a transfer target for the Gunners three years ago.

Arsenal have been linked with a move to sign Lyon striker Moussa Dembele and if they land him they might make Arsene Wenger look very foolish indeed.

The legendary Gunners boss had the opportunity to snare the powerful frontman from Celtic before he headed for France (The Sun).

Dembele went to his homeland for £19.7 million and his form since has made a mockery of such a price tag.

Ligue 1 naturally isn’t as strong as the Premier League but the youngster looks born to score goals.

Wenger was preparing to add Dembele to his ranks with Alexis Sanchez on the cusp of a move to Manchester United.

He didn’t land him and some Arsenal supporters will have been watching with intrigue as Dembele headed for Lyon.

The 23-year-old has quickly become one of Europe’s most lethal finishers.

During 2019/20 he has fired in 22 goals taking his tally at Lyon to 42 in 88 games.

Arsenal are once again interested in landing him again but this time the valuation is naturally through the roof.

Lyon hope to recoup £72 million for the marksman, according to Le 10 Sport and that represents a massive hike on the price Celtic offloaded him for.

Mikel Arteta will probably in the market for a striker, especially if he is forced into selling Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Signing Dembele back in 2017 could have proved a stroke of genius.

They’d have tied down one of Europe’s hottest properties and whilst he adapted to the Premier League he would have certainly weighed in with a few goals.

Now, the Gunners must pay over the odds to land the Frenchman and that looks like a mistake on Wenger’s part.
