'Arsenal are going to be laughing': Charles Watts shares potential 'big boost' for Arteta
Charles Watts is hopeful that Arsenal forward Emile Smith Rowe can play a big part for the Gunners in the second half of the season.
The Hale End graduate has been on the sidelines since September. However, he looks to be on the right track back to fitness.
Smith Rowe hasn’t featured since the 3-1 defeat at Manchester United just over two months ago.
He was injured in the warm-down and aggravated a groin issue that then required surgery.
Arsenal have coped well in Smith Rowe’s absence, with Gabriel Martinelli shining on the left flank.
However, the Gunners now have a new problem up front, with Gabriel Jesus set for a spell on the sidelines.
The Brazil international underwent knee surgery after picking up an injury at the World Cup.
The Guardian has speculated that Jesus could be out for up to three months.
With that in mind, Smith Rowe could play a key role right away when Arsenal return to action.
He could take over on the left flank, with Martinelli potentially featuring up front as an alternative to Eddie Nketiah.
‘They really need him’
Watts spoke about how much of a “big boost” it would be for Arsenal if Smith Rowe can stay fully fit for the long term.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: “He’s got a really big part to play in the second half of the season. It is that whole cliché of ‘like a new signing’.
“Obviously, he’s not a new signing, we know that.
“But suddenly having him involved again if he’s fit, and if he’s healthy and he’s finally got over this groin issue – which, fingers crossed, he will have done because of the operation – and you can get him back to the sort of fitness and sharpness he showed at the first half of last season, then Arsenal are going to be laughing.
“And they really need him, they need his goals. If Jesus is going to be out for a period of time, they need all their goalscorers fit and healthy and available. So having Smith Rowe there is going to be a big boost.”
With Jesus set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Arsenal could really do with some good news on the fitness front.
Hopefully Smith Rowe’s surgery will have sorted out his groin problems once and for all.
It’s good to see him in training in Dubai and hopefully he can hit the ground running on his return to action.
