Arsenal and Tottenham target, Dayot Upamecano, has been given an apparent ultimatum over his future with RB Leipzig by the German club’s sporting director, Oliver Mintzlaff.
According to a report from Bild with comments from Mintzlaff, Upamecano will either be sold or sign a new deal. That puts paid to any potential of the defender being allowed to leave for nothing.
Upamecano is a long-time target of both Arsenal and Tottenham. The north London duo are both said to be keen on the Leipzig man, who has impressed in Germany in recent seasons.
But with his contract set to expire in 2021, Mintzlaff has made it clear he won’t allow his man to leave for nothing.
“‘Upa’ is an extremely important player for us and one of the most sought-after talents in Europe.
And we can assure that we have a clear understanding with him and his agent he won’t leave us on a free. We can’t afford that as a club.
There are only two options: prolong or leave. I am sure we’ll soon find out in which direction it’s going.”
Those comments from Mintzlaff are bound to alert both the Gunners and Spurs. This, despite a recent report from Football.London claiming Arsenal may be priced out of a move for Upamecano.
A top player but all about who can afford him – TBR View
If the chance to sign Upamecano comes up for either club, they have to take the opportunity. He is a top player already and at just 21 has ample time to develop even more.
The problem will come down to the fee. However, there is even talk of that coming down. Previous reports of over £50m seem to be wide of the mark, with Leipzig now reportedly willing to accept around £34m. (Bild)
At that price, Upamecano is a must for any interested party. But the current financial crisis globally will affect that you would assume.
Either way, it is a boost for Arsenal and Spurs knowing that Leipzig will be willing to sell.
