Arsenal 3-1 Stoke: Three things we learnt

Arsenal could win the title this season

Many Arsenal supporters would have left the Emirates Stadium on Saturday with the prospect of a Premier League title suddenly looking just that little bit more realistic. Victory over Stoke on home soil may not come as any real surprise, but Arsene Wenger’s side demonstrated composure, character and quality to recover from being a goal behind. When the Frenchman needed his players to step up and deliver, they certainly did not let him down.

The question now is: can The Gunners secure a first title in over a decade? Arsenal have always possessed a host of talented, creative midfield players but this year Wenger appears to have resolved his side’s defensive frailties. Petr Cech is a genuine world-class goal-keeper, Laurent Koscielny looks a vastly improved player compared to the one that first appeared in English football, and Granit Xhaka provides a fearsome foil in front of the back four. They also have plenty of strength in depth. Per Mertesacker, Aaron Ramsey, Lucas Perez (who scored a hat-trick in mid-week), Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla were all either absent or had to be content with a place on the bench against Stoke.

There can be little doubt about it, Arsenal are in the thick of the title race. But do they have the stamina to sustain their lofty position in the table?
