Mesut Ozil isn’t at his best
Another game passed without a goal or an assist for Mesut Ozil, which in itself isn’t too concerning, but he isn’t influencing matches in the way we know he can. His passing remains crisp and inventive, but the final product is lacking at the moment. The German enjoyed the best creative season recorded since Opta began last season and it was expected that he would perform at a similar level this season. However, he has only one assist to his name and his chances created is significantly lower. This could be due to the change in system as Arsenal now have a more nimble forward leading the line, but it remains a worry for supporters.
There are few players in football that possess the skill-set that Ozil does and for that reason, he should remain in the first team. However, if Arsenal are to challenge for the title, they need to find a way to get Ozil more involved in the final third. It doesn’t seem to be a confidence issue, but more that he isn’t getting the touches in the final third that he was last season. The German hasn’t been at his best for the last few weeks and it is crucial that he becomes more influential over the Christmas period.
