Arrival of Fernando Fonseca gives Celtic perfect excuse to ditch Mikael Lustig

Celtic have stepped up their hunt for a new right-back, which surely leaves Mikael Lustig’s future in major doubt.

According to The Scottish Sun, Celtic are ready to make a bid for FC Porto youngster Fernando Fonseca.

Having chased Omar Elabdellaoui and Timothy Castagne this month, Brendan Rodgers has now diverted his attention to Fonseca.

The Portugal youth international nearly joined Juventus for £2m last summer and could be available for an even cheaper price this month, as per this report.

Celtic have been desperate to sign a new right-back this month and their search has led them to Fonseca, with Porto willing to sell him.

The 21-year-old predominantly features for Porto’s B team but has made his first-team debut for the Portuguese top division side.

Fonseca’s potential arrival in Glasgow surely spells the end of Lustig’s time at the club.

The Sweden international has been with Celtic since 2012, racking up over 250 appearances during his stay.

But with his contract expiring next summer, Celtic are looking for a younger defender to come in and replace the long-serving 32-year-old.

Lustig’s performances in the last couple of seasons have drawn some criticism from fans and it is time for a fresh approach.

Fonseca could compete with Anthony Ralston for the right-back spot, leaving Lustig free to find a new club in the summer.
