Arrival of Jamaal Lascelles would spell the end for Ashley Williams

It appears that Everton boss Marco Silva has identified the man he wants to strengthen the defence at Goodison Park for next season. According to The Sun, Everton are hopeful of bringing Jamaal Lascelles from Newcastle United. The report claims the Toffees are hopeful uncertainty over Rafa Benitez’s future at St James’ Park could help them secure a £30 million move for the Toon captain.

It would be a fantastic signing for Everton. The club needs a new centre-back to partner Michael Keane, who finally discovered his better form toward the end of his debut season. Lascelles had a brilliant campaign, with many questioning why he was not in England’s World Cup squad for Russia.

However, whilst Everton fans will welcome the arrival of Lascelles, it is a deal that would surely spell the end for one man’s Everton career.

Ashley Williams has already had a bad week. An innocuous collision with Javier Hernandez on international duty with Wales had drastic consequences. Williams shattered ribs in his side and collapsed a lung.

The news that Lascelles is being lined up will not put a smile on his face in his Beverly Hills hospital bed.

Everton struggled at the back last year. In brutal honesty, the main culprit was Williams. His age has caught up with him. Now 33-years-old, the Welshman has lost a turn of pace. The same can be said for his fellow veteran Phil Jagielka. But the club captain has also put in the odd good performance.

Ask an Everton fan to name a good performance from Williams, and they’d probably mention one for Wales at Euro 2016.

He has not been the player that was expected after his reported £12 million switch. His red card v Burnley in March was the last straw for Sam Allardyce and for many fans. Everton’s Goodison faithful would be happy to see him leave.

With Keane, Lascelles, Jagielka, Ramiro Funes Mori and Mason Holgate all present, the Welshman would certainly look like the odd one out.
