Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday afternoon means that manager Arne Slot has now matched an unwanted record that hasn’t been seen at Anfield in 11 years.
Liverpool went into the game on the back of two Premier League defeats, but a Bryan Mbeumo opener in just 62 seconds set the tone.
Cody Gakpo equalised late on to spur Anfield’s noise, but that was soon quietened when Harry Maguire rose highest to head Manchester United back in front in a huge Premier League clash.
It leaves Liverpool four points behind Arsenal, and Arne Slot has now matched a feat that was set by former boss Brendan Rodgers with the loss.

Arne Slot has matched Brendan Rodgers’ unwanted streak of games with Man United loss
The run started in Liverpool’s last-gasp 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace at the end of September, with Eddie Nketiah’s 97th-minute winner putting them to the sword.
They followed that up with a 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League via a Victor Osimhen penalty, and their misery was compounded when Estevao’s last-minute winner for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge handed Liverpool three losses in a row.
But Sunday found new levels of losses under the Dutchman when Harry Maguire headed home to make it four Liverpool defeats on the trot.

That hasn’t been seen since November 2014. The Reds, under Brendan Rodgers, lost 1-0 to Newcastle away from home thanks to an Ayoze Perez winner.
Just three days later, a 1-0 defeat in Spain to Real Madrid made it a double, before Liverpool were beaten at Anfield by Chelsea with Diego Costa scoring the winner on Merseyside to cap a poor week.
The international break gave some respite, but a 3-1 defeat at Crystal Palace made it four losses in a row under the former Swansea boss.
Liverpool are undoubtedly in a better position at present, given they finished sixth under Rodgers, though they were 12th after the South London loss. Slot will be hoping it isn’t five defeats when they come up against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Jurgen Klopp managed to avoid four-game losing streak as Liverpool boss
Of course, that backdates to Brendan Rodgers’ tenure at the club – meaning that in Jurgen Klopp’s entire nine-year spell on Merseyside, he failed to lose four games in a row. Klopp departed Liverpool in May 2024 after hoisting them back to the top of the English game.
Funnily enough, Liverpool’s first run of successive defeats in the Premier League was a four-game red streak in February 2021, with defeats to Brighton, Manchester City, Leicester City and Everton.
They had also lost 3-2 to Manchester United in the FA Cup in late January, though two league wins over Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United pushed them back to zero.
As a result, it was a 2-0 win over RB Leipzig in February 2021 that reset the counter before their fourth-successive league defeat.
That allowed the German to avoid matching Brendan Rodgers’ unwanted feat, but their loss to Manchester United has now put him in the same boat as the Northern Irish boss.
