Some of the best players in football history have gone on to become incredible managers.

Zinedine Zidane won three Champions Leagues with Real Madrid after a legendary playing career.

Johan Cruyff was a revolutionary manager at Barcelona after a carving out a remarkable legacy as a player, while Franz Beckenbauer won the World Cup as both a player and a manager.

Unfortunately though, some great players don’t go down that path.

Indeed, the likes of Pele, Ronaldo and Luis Figo never went into management, and, sadly, one modern-day great also isn’t keen on becoming a manager in the future.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Arne Slot has been asked which Liverpool player would make the best manager.

According to to Slot, Virgil van Dijk would be a brilliant gaffer, but the Liverpool boss says the centre-back has no interest in becoming a head coach in the future.

Virgil van Dijk doesn’t want to become a manager

Slot spoke about Van Dijk and his plans post-retirement.

According to Slot, the centre-back would make a good manager, but he has no interest in taking that route.

Van Dijk is the best defender in the world according to some, but he’s not keen on teaching the next generation his tricks of the trade.

“Which Liverpool player would make the best manager?” Slot was asked.

“I know he’s not interested in becoming a manager, and that’s Virgil,” Slot said.

“He’s mostly the one I pick when I want to give information during a game. He has good knowledge of the game. Mac Allister has good knowledge of the game and he can implement the ideas we have quite fast.”

Former Liverpool players who’ve become managers

Van Dijk won’t be going into management when he’s finished, but there are plenty of former Liverpool players who have gone into management and been successful.

Indeed, a number of former Anfield favourites have graduated into management.

Xabi Alonso was linked with the Liverpool job last summer before Slot was appointed, and he continues to do great work at Bayer Leverkusen.

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard’s stock has fallen somewhat in recent years, but he did win a league title with Rangers at one point.

Van Dijk won’t be following in these players’ footsteps, but there’s no shortage of former Liverpool players who have transitioned into management in recent years.
