Liverpool beat Bologna 2-0 on Wednesday evening, but one player may have come away from that match rather disappointed.
Indeed, Darwin Nunez, once again, drew a blank for Liverpool in the Champions League, and after the game, the Uruguayan’s performance was questioned once again.
Speaking on the Official Liverpool Podcast, Arne Slot was asked about Nunez’s lack of goals after the game, and the manager actually went out to bat for his striker.
Indeed, Slot says that Nunez’s lack of goals can be explained by his lack of minutes, while he also pointed the finger at his teammates against Bologna, claiming that not enough chances were created as the final ball was missing too often.

Arne Slot defends Darwin Nunez
Slot got behind the £70m striker and defended him from this criticism.
“I don’t think it’s necessary to say he’s only scored one for Liverpool because you have to look at the playing time he got,” Slot said.
“I don’t look at it in the way you do and only look at the individual. In the first hour we didn’t create a lot of chances for him as well because we missed the last pass on numerous occasions.”
“His home game against Bournemouth was a great goal, and today the team we faced was really hard and tough on him and his teammates didn’t always find him when they could have.”
Liverpool create a lot of chances
Slot isn’t wrong about Liverpool’s chance creation against Bologna, but, more widely, Liverpool do create a lot of chances.
There’s a lot to be said about expected goals as a metric, but the Reds are second in terms of expected goals this season, and that would suggest that they are creating chances.
Nunez can be deadly when he’s at his best, but his confidence seems to be shot at the moment, and the fact that he’s not playing regular football certainly isn’t helping on that front.
Luckily, it looks as though the manager is right behind him, and hopefully, we see Nunez spark a run of good form sooner rather than later.
