Arne Slot did something Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk will hate during Chelsea 2-1 Liverpool

Liverpool fell to a third straight defeat as a late strike from Estevao Willian secured a 2-1 win for Chelsea.

Both the Reds and the Blues had 12 shots at goal, but it was Chelsea who were more accurate with six on target compared to just two from Liverpool.

Arne Slot will surely be furious with the manner in which Liverpool threw a point away, but the Dutchman is largely to blame for inviting pressure onto his side after choosing to bring Wataru Endo on for Alexis Mac Allister.

Arne Slot sent out a terrible message to his Liverpool players

It was the 86th minute when the Japan international – typically used as a gritty utility player for Liverpool to see out wins – replaced the Argentina international.

However, Slot still had a forward to choose from in Federico Chiesa – who scored a late goal against Crystal Palace last time out in the Premier League – as well as another attacking threat to Chelsea in Jeremie Frimpong.

It suggested the Liverpool boss was happy to settle for a point rather than go for the win, and it ended up costing the Reds as Estevao stole all three points in the 95th minute.

Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk have already shared quotes to suggest they will strongly disagree with negative Arne Slot call

After both signing new contracts during the summer, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk made it clear they mean business this season and want to win everything in sight, as well as setting the standards at Anfield.

The official Liverpool website interviewed the duo together, quoting Van Dijk in particular as saying: “You’re going into the season with goals that you want to compete for every trophy that you participate in. I think that’s the bare minimum for a club like Liverpool… personally, I think that’s what you play football for.

“You want to be leaving a legacy behind, you want to be remembered, you want to inspire the next generation in everything you do.”

Salah – who Florian Wirtz admires – and Van Dijk are now 33 and 34 years of age respectively, and both see their contracts expire in July 2027, meaning there is little time for them to build on their success at Anfield.

They will have penned those deals in the hope that Slot matches their lofty ambitions across the next two years, but the negative substitution at Stamford Bridge will have surely left the experienced duo concerned.
