Are Tottenham targeting Leighton Baines?
Spurs face a battle to finish in the top four and a place in Europe’s elite competition for next season would mean boss Andre Villas-Boas having a completely different transfer budget. With Benoit Assou-Ekotto set to move to France in the summer, Villas-Boas has made signing a new left-back one of his top priorities, and is willing to pay as much as £12million to land Baines.
Baines still has two years to run on his contract at Goodison Park but Everton could face a battle to keep hold as Manchester United are also long-time admires.
The left-back has been in impressive form for Everton this term and has featured 40 times in all competitions, scoring seven goals and registering six assists.
While Baines is a loyal club man, he knows his chances of overhauling Ashley Cole as England’s first choice before the World Cup could depend on a move to a top-four club.
There’s no doubt that he would be a cracking signing for Spurs, he’s solid defensively plus he’ll give the side that something extra in attack. This season Baines has directly contributed to a little under 20% of Everton’s 51 goals. WhoScored.com‘s latest article reveals that he is in fact Europe’s most creative defender. Below is an infographic taken from the site.
The 28-year-old is exactly the calibre of player Spurs need to bring to the club in order to make a top four position their own. He’ll also provide a great boost in quality during European games next season. Whilst some may argue that his age is a problem, I feel he has plenty of years left at the top of his game.
David Moyes will do his best to keep Baines at the club, like he has done for the past few seasons. But the attraction of Champions League football and a starting spot in the England Squad could pull the left-back into the clutches of AVB with a move to White Hart Lane.
Comment in the section below to have your say! Will Baines leave Everton? and if so, would he be a good signing for Spurs?
