Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen to sign Florian Grillitsch (The Metro).
Mauricio Pochettino is set to lose Mousa Dembele this month before he becomes a free agent in the summer, with The Evening Standard reporting that the club have accepted an £11 million offer from Beijing Guoan.
The Belgian could move sooner rather than later, meaning Spurs will need a replacement.
Austrian international Grillitsch has been having a good season for Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga, and is an attractive proposition at just £18 million – the value of his release clause.
Interestingly the talk is that Grillitsch could be a possible replacement for Dembele, but he’s actually a bit more like a former Tottenham player, who left the club in the summer of 2017.
Grillitsch to be the player Tottenham though Bentaleb would?
Were Tottenham to successfully sign Grillitsch then it could be that he develops into the kind of player the club hoped Nabil Bentaleb would.
The Algerian had all the tools; height, mobility and skill, but couldn’t perform consistently enough during his three seasons with the club.
Ultimately he left in 2017 after making 66 appearances (scoring just one goal) with the majority of people feeling as though things could have gone so very differently.
Perhaps Grillitsch could turn into the dazzling technical midfield player who likes to get stuck in they thought they’d be getting with Bentaleb.
The early signs are there. The 6ft 2in midfielder is starting to turn heads with some eye catching displays, and perhaps working under Pochettino could be the catalyst he needs to turn into a top player.
