Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Sampdoria defender Joachim Andersen.
The north Londoners appear to be trying to prepare for the possibility of Toby Alderweireld leaving the club in the summer.
Spurs recently triggered the one-year extension in Alderweireld’s deal, meaning he could now stay until the summer of 2020, but a £25 million release clause will become active from the next transfer window.
There has been no indication from the player that he would sign a new deal, and so Spurs are trying to prepare themselves for his departure.
The Independent report that target Andersen would cost in the region of £35 million.
Spurs would give themselves a brilliant long-term pairing
Andersen would be an excellent signing for Tottenham.
He is tall, strong and quite quick across the ground. He is also a very accurate passer of the ball – as evidenced by his completion rate of 90% so far this season (WhoScored).
Andersen appears to be developing into a complete defender and excitingly, he’s still only 22 years of age.
If Tottenham got himand paired him with Davinson Sanchez, then they’d arguably be set for years, with the Colombian himself still only 22.
Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have been a quality partnership over the last few years, but Sanchez and Andersen would be fine long-term replacements.
Vertonghen recently signed a one-year contract extension, meaning he is due to leave the club in the summer of 2020 – he’d be 33 by that time.
