Are these two defensive midfielders the players Arsenal need to sign before deadline day?
There may be many problems ongoing at Arsenal at the moment, from issues at the top of the club to players wanting to leave, making it a very worrying time for Gunners fans. On the pitch things aren’t looking great either, as the London side were absolutely demolished by a rampant Liverpool side, 4-0.
Much was made of manager Arsene Wenger’s decision to bench new arrivals Sead Kolasinic, the Bundesliga left-back of the season last year, and striker Alexandre Lacazette, but the problems in Arsenal’s midfield were apparent from the get go.
Neither Granit Xhaka nor Aaron Ramsey seemed to have an inkling of defensive intent, more interested in making pointless forward runs or poor sideways passes, and the lack of tracking back was something that blighted the Gunners all afternoon.
Wenger’s side are, and have been for a long time, desperate for a top quality defensive midfielder, with a physical presence capable of breaking up play and providing protection for a vulnerable Arsenal back-four.
Here are two players the Gunners’ should be looking at before the end of the summer transfer window…
The Sporting midfielder has been in the sights of several Premier League clubs for what seems like forever, with Sky Sports most recently reporting West Ham’s interest in the Portuguese man. He would be a perfect fit in Arsenal’s midfield.
Standing at 6”1 and weighing around 85kg, William Carvalho is a mountain of a player, and offers the grit and physicality currently lacking in the Gunners’ midfield.
He has been an ever-present figure in Sporting Lisbon’s side for several seasons, but really made his breakthrough last season, tallying 32 appearances for the Portuguese side. The 25-year-old also registered two goals and three assists – not bad for a defensive midfielder.
Arsenal had been linked with a move for Carvalho in July, with Record, a Portuguese outlet, suggesting the Gunners were preparing a €30 million bid.
Many will remember Steven N’Zonzi from his time at Stoke but, since moving to Sevilla from the Potters, the Frenchman has made great strides, becoming an integral player for the Spanish outfit.
With Premier League experience, N’Zonzi could be the perfect piece in the Arsenal jigsaw, and the solution to their midfield woes. The former Blackburn midfielder offers a controlling presence infront of the defence, while he also has the discipline and power to command the centre of a pitch.
As reported by the Mirror, the Sevilla midfielder handed in a transfer request in order to secure a move, and Gunners fans have called on Wenger to sign N’Zonzi this summer.
