Max Meyer

Maximilian ‘Max’ Meyer is the dark horse out of all of these options, not necessarily attracting as much attention as his performances deserve. The 20-year-old is one of the hottest young prospects in European football, and is known for his love of dribbling and playing intricate passes in tight spaces.

Meyer has not exactly been prolific this season, only scoring six times and providing eight assists in all competitions, but consistently high performance levels will come with age, as he clearly has the talent to embed solid foundations for a successful career.

Tracking back and putting in challenges is not a major component of Max Meyer’s game, and while he is hardly alone in this amongst the rest of Europe’s tricky midfielders, it is not something that Jurgen Klopp would permit in his team. The Schalke 04 youngster is diminutive, with a very similar body shape to Mario Götze.

He is arguably the least versatile of the three options, operating almost explicitly in a central attacking midfield role, although he can also cause havoc further towards the left flank. Both Meyer’s preferred position and his lack of defensive contribution is similar to a certain Brazilian maestro before he arrived at Liverpool; namely Philippe Coutinho, and it would fantastic for Reds fans if Meyer could follow the same path.
