Some of Swindon Town’s top players in recent seasons have been central midfielders. Massimo Luongo, Ben Gladwin, Yaser Kasim, and Louis Thompson are some of the players to have been on their books permanently. England international Ryan Mason and England Under 21 internationals John Swift and Alex Pritchard have also graced the turf of The County Ground following loan deals. Now only Yaser Kasim remains. The Iraqi international can pull the strings superbly when at his best, but over the last season has often been found missing from large chunks of matches. His best form came when alongside Massimo Luongo. With Luongo making lung bursting runs from box to box, Kasim was able to sit back and play his own luxury brand of football. So luxurious in fact that he is a firm fans favourite amongst Iraqi football supporters. One of his skill videos on YouTube has over 15,000 views. Perhaps not surprisingly, all the clips included were from before the 2015/16 season.

Since Luongo has moved on to pastures new, Kasim is missing a midfield partner to find with searching long balls or intricate little flicks. Anton Rodgers, who has been with Swindon since 2014, isn’t quite the companion Kasim is after. Whilst Drissa Traore, who has recently been released by the club after one season, evidently wasn’t seen as good enough. Often seen as the most crucial position on the pitch, Swindon have one piece of the jigsaw already fitted. They just need to find the other to really help their potential bid for promotion next season.
