Centre Back

As well as a formidable goalkeeper, a prominent factor in keeping clean sheets is a pair of rock solid centre backs. During recent season Swindon Town have had centre backs who have progressed into becoming established Championship centre backs, and have also signed some promising youngsters from Premier League outfits. Gordon Greer, Alan McCormack, Aden Flint and Jack Stephens all fall under this bracket. Southampton loanee Stephens, along with fellow Southampton loanee Jordan Turnbull helped out hugely in Swindon’s promotion bid last season. Although Turnbull still remains at SN1 on another season long loan, he hasn’t quite been the same without his defensive partner Stephens alongside him.

His fellow centre back for most of this current campaign has been Raphael Rossi Branco. Passion, hunger, and commitment are three traits which football fans love to see in their players; Branco possesses all three in abundance. Sadly, however, he’s prone to making the odd mistake which tends to overshadow his other stronger attributes. Many of the goals conceded by Town this season have come from defensive blunders, and could have been prevented. Unfortunately blame has to lie with the two centre backs, and a robust, more experienced one is needed this summer.
