Goalkeeper

A key factor to a successful side is having a match winning, trustworthy keeper between the sticks. In recent successful Swindon sides they have had exactly this in the form of one man, Wes Foderingham. Signed by Paolo Di Canio in October 2011 on an initial loan deal, Foderingham went on to make over 160 appearances for Swindon. In that time he helped win the League Two title; reach the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final and the League One play offs on two separate occasions. Even if his distribution wasn’t always to be admired, as a young keeper he had a tremendous amount of potential. This is why Di Canio and the other managers that followed all kept Foderingham as their first choice goalkeeper. He was quite simply a match winner. Pulling off remarkable saves was his forte, and they earned Swindon some valuable points in his time at the club.

After he left in the summer of 2015, Swindon bought in Lawrence Vigeroux on loan from Liverpool. Much like Foderingham, a young goalkeeper with a lot of potential. As a fine shot stopper, Vigeroux showed glimpses of what he had to offer, but ultimately his game, along with back up goalkeeper Tyrell Belford was laden with mistakes. Together the pair of them over the last season weren’t able to fill the void left by Wes Foderingham. This is backed up further as Swindon conceded 71 goals in the 2015/16 campaign, where as in the four seasons Foderingham was first choice they averaged 47 goals conceded. A significant difference which will need to be addressed this summer.
