Centre-back incoming – Mourinho favours a defence that sees the value in protecting the goal from shots, so we can expect to see another centre-back added to partner Chris Smalling who is not afraid to throw themselves in front of anything.

Neven Subotic and Pepe would be two potential signings for Mourinho and the significance that Jose places on the defensive stability of a team makes the signing of a new defender absolutely crucial to the success of the team.

Deadwood clear out – Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and Phil Jones are just a few of the players who should be ready to find a new club if Mourinho arrives.

At each club he has been with, Mourinho has tended to work with a smaller squad and does not rotate his players as regularly as many top managers. The fringe players in the United squad have often been the ones who have let both Moyes and Van Gaal down and Mourinho takes little time in deciding which players fit into his plans.

The former Porto boss is likely to already have a good idea of the players he thinks are worth keeping and is sure to have plenty of targets lined up.
