It’s a sad indictment of Everton’s season so far that fans of the Toffees are already looking to the next year for any element of joy and hope. Everton have regularly surrendered leads (incredibly losing over 15 points from winning points), and have conceded more goals at home than lowly Aston Villa. This is a shocking fact for a team that should be aiming towards Europe this season with the personnel at their disposal.
Whether Martinez should still be the manager come the longer days and sunnier months of the summer is certainly an article for another time. A new lease of life has returned at Goodison Park with the arrival of a billionaire investor, Farhad Moshiri. Some feel that a change in manager to accompany a change at the top would be welcome indeed.
However, this article focuses with the on the pitch changes required at Everton rather than in the boardroom or on the side-line. One would be hard pushed to argue that the Blues were not underachieving this season, and while some blame must be apportioned to Martinez, this does not give the whole picture. There are positions that Everton need to find both starters and cover for to enter the next season with the best possible chance at challenging for Europe and; optimistically, potentially even higher up the table. With figures bandied around of an Everton war chest of £100 million, the Blues should have the financial clout to compete with some of the top teams in the league.
