Luke Shaw
A man that could still make the Euros is Luke Shaw. After a disappointing first season at Manchester United, the highly rated left-back started this season off very well until a nasty leg break saw the Southampton youth graduate out for the rest of the season. Roy Hodgson claims that Shaw could still make the Euros with the young 20-year-old; who has already made six international appearances, expected to make a comeback before the end of the season.
Shaw is nailed on to replicate Ashley Cole in becoming a centurion with England with the United defender highly praised for his offensive threat and tactical decision making. Whilst it would be great to see Luke Shaw back to his best as soon as possible, it would be harsh on those left-backs who have excelled this season to not go to the Euros ahead of him.
Whilst only two of these left-backs will make it to the Euros, there is certainly great depth to England’s squad in this role. At this moment in time, it looks likely that Ryan Bertrand and Danny Rose will be Hodgson’s choices for the tournament in France. However, to have the likes of the experienced Baines and the uncapped Cresswell waiting in the wings, it’s positive news for England that even if an injury to Rose or Bertrand occurred, there’s still competent cover at left-back.
The next year or so will be interesting to see the fight escalate for the left-back position. Luke Shaw will inevitably make his comeback and be Hodgson’s first choice in that position for the years to come, but those who miss out; and more who come onto the scene, will be hungry to deputise and push Shaw off his perch.
