Leighton Baines
For the last several years, Leighton Baines has been England’s first choice left-back. The Everton man had always been consistent for the Three Lions and whilst he was defensively solid, he also posed a threat with his set pieces.
However, this has been a difficult season for Everton and Leighton Baines respectively. Baines suffered early on in the campaign with an ankle injury picked up in pre-season and has struggled to regain the form that made himself and Seamus Coleman notoriously feared in the full-back areas. As much as Everton have looked threatening going forward and putting the ball in the back of the opposition’s net, they have struggled trying to keep the ball out of their own.
Whilst Baines will probably not join up with the national squad this summer, his focus will be similar to that of Kieran Gibbs – trying to nail down a spot at his club after Bryan Oviedo being preferred to the Englishman as of late.
