Gareth McAuley – West Brom
Traditionally, Gareth McAuley should be nowhere near this list. A centre-half who, at 37, is the oldest outfield player in the Premier League, but he has been a star in West Brom’s magnificent season, in which they sit in eighth place, are 10 points away from achieving a club record of number of points achieved in a single season, and have 10 games to do so.
McAuley has been as good as they come in the Premier League this season, with his numbers being right up there with some of the best centre-halves in the country. He’s also established quite a knack for scoring goals, with his six strikes being more than that of Daniel Sturridge, as well as England and Manchester United’s record goal-getter Wayne Rooney.
The former Leicester City defender cites his late development to an all new fitness regime and willingness to defy his critics over the course of the campaign. It can rarely be said at this stage of an individual’s career, but the 2016-17 Premier League campaign has been the best of McAuley’s career and he shows no sign of stopping.
