Oriol Romeu – Southampton

This has been a season of defiance of Southampton’s Spanish midfielder Oriol Romeu who has proven both his worth and ability to perform in the Premier League. Having been given his first senior start at Barcelona under current Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, Romeu joined Chelsea and had suffered similar fate in London as he did with his boyhood club – a lack of game time.

But he joined Southampton last summer, after loan spells with Valencia and Stuttgart, and has enjoyed two consecutive seasons of making over 30 appearances. He played a crucial role in the Saint’s charge to the English League Cup Final, where they suffered heartbreak against Manchester United, but was a major influence behind their mammoth success against Liverpool in the two-legged semi-final, proving a stubborn wall in front of a relatively inconsistent back-line that was missing its usual names.

In the Premier League, he’s been a rock in midfield, with only himself, N’Golo Kanté and Ander Herrera completing more than 50 tackles and interceptions in the league this season – the latter two are arguably the best midfielders in the country. His performance against Manchester City earlier this season epitomised the influence he has had for Claude Puel’s side throughout the campaign.
