Rather like his compatriot Paul Pogba, Martial arrived last summer for an extortionate fee. However, unlike Pogba, Martial made an instant impact scoring a splendid solo goal against Liverpool on his Old Trafford debut. 11 league goals was a very decent first season for the former Monaco striker, but he is yet to complete 90 Premier League minutes under Jose Mourinho this term. He has suffered some muscular problems, but it does feel as if the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic has shifted the emphasis away from him.

This may be a short-term problem if the Swede leaves United when his one-year contract expires, but Martial did look like being a player the Red Devils would build their attack around for years to come. That Martial is a fantastic talent is certain, but there is uncertainty over whether he is better as a central striker or a wide forward starting on the flank. Mourinho has always likes industrious players in wide areas, perhaps not a quality Martial has in abundance. The phrase ‘second season syndrome’ springs to mind, but the 20-year-old has plenty of time to re-establish himself.
