4th –  Benni McCarthy
Price: £2.2 million
Apps/Goals: 11/0

Another one of the many mediocre attackers who was at the disposal of Gianfranco Zola. Benni McCarthy came to the Hammers with high hopes following excellent spells at FC Porto and Blackburn Rovers. Here was a guy who was a South African legend and has had an excellent record at almost every club he’s been with… every club except West Ham of course. Within a week, he managed to get himself injured, and that was pretty much the end of his Premier League career. After recovering, there was accusation of McCarthy being overweight and unable to handle the intensity of English football, certainly proved by his certain lack of goals. McCarthy could have accomplished so much at West Ham, but his stint turned out to be massively underwhelming. Having signed a two-year contract, he was paid off to leave the club.
