January is a time for bargain buying; an excellent chance to get one’s hands on some top quality goods for a reasonable price. The same applies with football – every club is desperately trying to bring in someone who can add that extra something to their squad. Alas, not every January transfer is a success – some have been abysmal in fact, especially in the case of West Ham United. So, you’re asking, who has been the worst of the bunch?
5th – Mido
The definition of a last ditch transfer just for the sake of it, Mido’s arrival at Upton Park raised many eyebrows due to his decline in form and inability to score goals. He had been on loan to Wigan and then his home club of Zamalek before coming to West Ham and managed to demonstrate how much of a liability he was in his short spell at Upton Park. Then again, the striking options at the time weren’t exactly world class – with Carlton Cole as the first-choice striker. Nevertheless, Mido had the potential to rediscover the form that made him a hit (of sorts) at Spurs but to everyone’s dismay, he didn’t deliver. Mido went onto retire at age 30 and has now began his coaching career. Let’s just hope he’s not coaching any of the strikers…
