Mineiro – Another particularly bizarre signing, was Mineiro back in 2008. The Brazilian defensive midfielder was into the twilight of his career and Chelsea brought him into their squad for the solitary appearance and several reserve matches.
It says a lot about the mentality of the club at the time – and the injuries to Michael Essien – that Mineiro had to be signed as a third choice defensive midfielder and made just the one start during the 08-09 campaign. Mineiro’s acquisition must have been one of the best examples of Chelsea making any signing to avoid putting faith in their youngest products.
Ricardo Quaresma – There was a time; albeit relatively brief, that Quaresma was thought of to be more talented than Cristiano Ronaldo. By the time Chelsea got their hands on him, his performances had dropped off and injuries had caught up with him, in a manner that is disturbingly similar to Radamel Falcao and Alexandre Pato. The Portuguese winger made four appearances during his loan from Inter and was the first of many Chelsea signings that were just a few years too late. It almost seems as though the Stamford Bridge outfit never take anyone off their list of targets until they sign them.
The winger was only 25 at this time, but Chelsea’s decision to loan in such a big name and hardly use him again brought about questions of who called for the transfer.
