Eight of the strangest Chelsea transfers ever

Yossi Benayoun – Benayoun was signed by Chelsea because of his friendship with Fernando Torres (if you believe certain reports) and the Israeli midfielder; despite some nice touches, was clearly never up to the standard of the rest of the squad.

Oddly, Benayoun was always one of those players who seemed to be a perfect professional and a tidy attacking midfielder, but never did anything to suggest he should be in any squad aspiring to a league title. Despite this, he has remarkably played for Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool. From Chelsea’s perspective, he was a player who never made it quite to the par one would expect, but it would be interesting to know what he thinks of his own career. Benayoun could have stuck with mid-table sides and been a star throughout, but he seemed happy to soak up the big club atmosphere and fade into the background.

Michael Hector – In the same window as the odd Djilobodji signing, Chelsea decided to sign and loan back Michael Hector from Reading.

Another central defender, Hector was one of the most shocking transfers in the history of the Premier League and by most accounts, is hardly impressing in the Championship, let alone making the step up to the Premier League champions. It will be hard to eclipse this one out of all the truly questionable signings, as this really had the makings of an absolute panic.
