Khalid Boulahrouz – Signed for £9 million, Boulahrouz has to be one of the worst signings in Premier League history. At the time, the Dutch defender was only 23 and it was thought he could develop into a long-term replacement for Ricardo Carvalho or John Terry.

Unfortunately, Boulahrouz didn’t make it any further than a handful of appearances; largely at right-back, and was quickly disposed of after showing he was never going to make it to the standard that the ‘new’ Chelsea wanted. Some might argue that splashing on a promising defender in this sense is similar to Chelsea’s pursuit of John Stones, although its hard to argue that Boulahrouz was in the same league as the promising Everton man.

Papy Djilobodji – After a summer of messing around in their pursuit of John Stones, Djilobodji was the ultimate panic buy as the window ended. It looks as though Chelsea’s summer transfer policy; or lack of it, was the ultimate demise of José Mourinho’s relationship with his bosses and the impression was very much that Djilobodji and Michael Hector were signed by Michael Emenalo rather than the egotistical Portuguese boss.

Djilobodji is now on loan at Werder Bremen for the remainder of the season and he must be as confused as anyone as to why Chelsea bothered to add him to their squad.
