Any club can go a bit into ‘headless chicken’ mode when they have a new billionaire owner and with it, can come some pretty disastrous transfers.

Chelsea; of all the English clubs, have had the most success for their decade or so of cash splashing, but there have been some absolute howlers in the process of making the Blues one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Since buying the club in 2003, Roman Abramovich has gone through periods of surprising purse-string tightening and usually, this has been when we have experienced some of the worst transfers in the oligarch era at Stamford Bridge. The most worrying sign from these weird signings is how often these obscure acquisitions; who largely didn’t feature, blocked the opportunities for some highly talented youngsters that Chelsea have produced.

The following list will look at the oddest and; in some cases, worst transfers made by Chelsea in their recent era of success. So don’t expect to see anything from before 2003 because; as you should know, that’s when Chelsea were founded, wasn’t it?
