Fabio Borini (Sunderland)

Fabio Borini is Sunderland’s next best striker after Jermain Defoe. We all know that if it wasn’t for Defoe’s goals, Sunderland would be preparing for life in the Championship. His 15 league goals made all the difference.

Borini, on the other hand, has scored just five times in the league this season. When he was on loan at Sunderland in 2013/14, he performed better than he has done the most recent time around. Perhaps that is because when he was on loan, he had something to prove to his parent club Liverpool, but now that they have sold him to Sunderland he is not putting in as much effort.

After Sunderland escaped relegation, Sam Allardyce said that he didn’t want to be involved in a relegation battle again. It is easy to say, but not so easy to put into practice when The Black Cats are so heavily reliant on Defoe. If the Englishman gets injured, Fabio Borini will take his place but it’s not a certainty that he’ll be anywhere near as effective.

The Italian needs to step up and prove to Allardyce that he can either work in tandem with Defoe or fill in for him when necessary. He scored two goals in his last five Premier League appearances of the season but overall, his goals were too much of a rare occurrence.  It could just take a few summer signings from the Sunderland boss for Borini to fall down the pecking order.
