Sent out on loan to Torino by new Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, Hart remains England’s first-choice goalkeeper for the time being. Jack Butland is very much breathing down his neck, but a serious knee injury keeps him out Gareth Southgate’s first senior squad ahead of qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia.

Hart made two poor errors in the European Championships; palming Bale’s long-range free kick into the side netting and allowed Iceland’s Kolbeinn Sigthorsson’s shot to squirm under his body in the last-16. Unfortunately for the current Serie A performer, those two mistakes were compounded by his visible hubris throughout the tournament and show of bravado in the tunnel before the Iceland game.

Such antics are acceptable provided you produce the goods on the pitch, but can come back to haunt you if things go wrong. Nevertheless, Hart is set to remain between the sticks for the foreseeable future.
