During Manchester City’s most recent victories against Swansea City and West Ham United, it was a front three of Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane who received heaps of praise for their emphatic displays despite their relative youth. When 28-year-old Sergio Aguero came off the bench both matches, the game was already won and he was unable to have the significant impact that he is used to bestowing on his side. With the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho waiting in the wings combined with the fact that the Argentinian is reaching the back end of his prime, could his days at the Etihad be numbered?
Any Fantasy League player or Premier League fan will know that, on his day, there is no better striker in England than Sergio Aguero. Fact. His record of 113 goals in 168 games for City is impeccable and there are several aspects of his game that only the most talented of players can dream of emulating.
Nevertheless, over the last few months, Aguero has been used sparingly by City. Although this may be partially due to suspension and injury, you can’t help by feel that Pep Guardiola is preparing for a future without his prized number 10. The £30 million signing of Gabriel Jesus is sufficient evidence of this. Jesus’ brace against the Hammers and goal against Swansea has shown his intentions of getting regular playing time up front. Despite only being 19 years of age, the Brazilian has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water.
It’s worth remembering that Sergio Aguero has been playing in Manchester for over half a decade, ever since the days when Mario Balotelli and Gareth Barry were regulars at the Etihad. Only a handful of players have lasted that long in City’s ever-changing squad, most of whom being defenders. Needless to say that Aguero will suffer the same inevitable exit as those who proceeded him, but his time could come sooner than originally anticipated.
Will he be wearing a sky blue shirt come the start of the 2017/18 season? The odds are seeming increasingly unlikely…
