Is Manchester United really the right option for Juventus’ Paul Pogba?

With the persistent rumours circling about Paul Pogba’s alleged move back to Manchester United and Jose Mourinho’s determination to break the world transfer record in order to do so, the Red Devils would be securing the services of a world class player that Sir Alex Ferguson deemed not good enough.

However, question marks remain over where he would actually fit into a Mourinho line-up, as well as his baffling decision to ditch Juventus’ potential long awaited return to the pinnacle of European football in order to face off with FC Midtjyland on a cold rainy night in Manchester. There are a few reasons as to why Pogba should evaluate his options before moving back to Man Utd.

With the signings that Jose has made this transfer window already, along with evidence from the majority of his previous employers, it is fairly likely that Man United will line-up in a 4-2-3-1 formation come the start of the season. With Pogba being a central midfielder, he would be deployed in the two -man midfield behind the attack alongside one of Schneiderlin, Carrick, Fellaini or Schweingsteiger.

However, whichever one of those midfielders Mourinho decides to pair with the Frenchman, it still looks like very top heavy with Pogba being known more for his moments of brilliance in attack over his defensive work. Not to mention, Pogba rarely plays in a midfield two for Juventus, with the Italian giants frequently opting for a 4-3-3 or 3-5-2 system.

In order to play as one of that duo, you need the maturity and decision making to make it work efficiently. It could take Mourinho more time than he can afford to gain the control over a game which he seeks. Furthermore, it could leave Pogba frustrated if his form dips or he is dropped to the bench in favour of a midfielder who is a little more organised.

The other position that Mourinho could choose to deploy Pogba in is behind the striker which could be devastating, as many see that as his most influential position. However, with Wayne Rooney’s name being mentioned heavily by Jose, perhaps not.

If Pogba were to move to United this summer, the timing just seems odd. Juventus are flying high, with some tipping them to return to the summit of club football next season by winning the Champions League. Meanwhile, the Old Trafford outfit will be battling out on Thursday nights in the ‘ugly sister’ that is the Europa League.

This move would make much more sense if United were in the Champions League next term, for at least the former player would be able to showcase his undeniable brilliance on the big stage. Amongst other reasons, this is partly why so many tipped him to join Real Madrid over Man United this summer.

Let’s be honest, Pogba could walk into any team in world football tomorrow if he is played in the right position, yet he could be about to join a team who are not guaranteed any winner’s medals. They have struggled in the post-Ferguson era, and have just hired a manager in Jose Mourinho, who on last
season’s evidence, looked completely out of touch with what it takes to become
a champion of England.

Yes, United have brought in star names such as Ibrahimovic and Mkhitaryan, but there still seems to be a degree of uncertainty that looms over Old Trafford. It is far from guaranteed that splashing hundreds of millions of pounds will provide a quick fix, for this is what The Red Devils fell foul of
last season.

If he makes the move and United fail to impress fairly soon, then it will not be long before Paul Pogba starts wondering whether he made the right decision to leave Juventus at all, never mind going back to the club that shunned him just three years ago.
