The Amsterdam side defied the odds in the quarter-final to reach this stage with an impressive comeback against Schalke despite being down to 10 men going into extra-time. As has often been the case with the Dutch club, they boast a strong squad of talented youngsters who may attract interest from across Europe in the summer.

Currently second in the Eredivisie, four points behind Feyenoord, Lyon will not be looking forward to their visit to the intimidating support of the newly-named Johan Cruyff Arena. That said, the inconsistency of Peter Bosz’s team could cost them dear.

If Ajax can ensure that they produce their best form against Lyon in the semi-final then they should have enough to reach the final, and would clearly look to take advantage of United’s potential defensive frailties with their rapid counter attacking play.
