It appears Everton are ready to allow Antonee Robinson a permanent exit from the club this summer. As reported by the Liverpool Echo, the left-back is expected to join former loan club Wigan Athletic in the coming days. The report suggests a potential £2 million fee for the player but stresses nothing is yet concluded.
Robinson appeared unlikely to get first-team football at Everton. Lucas Digne had a stellar first season at Goodison Park whilst veteran Leighton Baines signed a new one-year deal this summer.
The impending arrival of Fabian Delph further adds left-back competition for Robinson.
So, at first look, selling Robinson makes sense. However, it could be an error from the Toffees.
Whilst Baines has signed a new one-year deal, it would seem unlikely he will do so again in 12 months time.
With that in mind, Everton could be left with just Digne as an out-and-out left-back next summer. At which point, the Toffees are going to need a new recruit.
In Robinson, they would have had the perfect back-up. The USA international clearly has talent and could have been trained as a potential suitor to Baines’ position at Everton.
Another season out on loan would have been the best option but it appears either the club or player have decided that an exit would be best.
Everton might live to regret that in 12 months time.
