Are Benkovic and Boyata a Premier League quality central defensive pairing?

Brendan Rodgers hasn’t had Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic available at the heart of his Celtic defence as often as he might have liked this season.

But he will be able to call on the duo for tonight’s crucial trip to Rosenborg as the Bhoys look to keep their Europa League hopes alive.

It is clear just how much Rodgers thinks of his favoured central defensive duo, as he has claimed that they are a pairing that would grace an English Premier League club.

According to the Sun, he said: “The two of them are top-class. If I was managing in the Premier League you would be happy with those two as centre halves.”

It is tough to argue with Rodgers’ assessment; Boyata is an international defender and Benkovic has enough quality to convince Leicester to shell out a considerable amount of money for him in the summer.

The duo will only get better from playing alongside each other and if they can get to full form and fitness between now and the end of the season, it will give Celtic a major boost in their quest to retain the title.

The biggest ask will be keeping the duo away from the English top flight.
