Are Arsenal ready to face life without Koscielny?

According to the Daily Mail, veteran defender Laurent Koscielny may be allowed to leave Arsenal this summer, with German outfit Borussia Dortmund tracking his availability.

The 33-year-old centre-back is in the final year of his current contract at the Emirates Stadium. The Frenchman is the Gunner’s club captain, and has spent the last nine years with the north London side.

Koscielny is a talismanic figure at Arsenal and is a leader for the club on the pitch. His exit would mean the loss of the club’s most experienced, authoritative and reliable centre-back. The 51-cap France international’s absence would leave a hole in the heart of the Gunners’ back line.

Unai Emery must ask himself whether his squad is ready to cope without Koscielny. The Spanish coach already has plenty of work to do this summer in terms of improving his rearguard, and that’s without taking his captain’s departure into account.

That isn’t to say that the manager ought to be building his plans around Koscielny. The Frenchman is certainly in the twilight of his career, and isn’t quite the player he once was. A chronic and recurring Achilles injury also means he cannot be relied upon to maintain his fitness throughout the campaign.

On top of that, the Gunners need to scrape together every penny they can get this summer, and this is likely their last chance to cash in on Koscielny before he becomes available on a free transfer.

The situation regarding the Arsenal captain certainly poses plenty of tough questions that Emery must find answers to.
