Celtic need a new right-back. That has become increasingly clear over the last 18 months. One option that was mentioned this month was Timothy Castagne. The Daily Record suggested he had become the Scottish side’s top target with a £6 million deal being mooted.
It became clear very quickly that Celtic could not get their man. As reported by the Scottish Sun, his Italian club Atalanta informed Celtic he would cost £10 million. That put him out of Celtic’s price-range.
Any final chance Celtic had of signing the player has also been eradicated by the player’s resurgence.
When Celtic were first linked with Castagne he was struggling to get into the first-team picture on a regular basis.

However, he is now thriving in Bergamo.
Castagne, playing from left wing-back, has played 90 minutes in Atalanta’s last four games. That has led to an upturn in form from his club. Impressive 6-2 and 5-0 wins against Sassuolo and Frosinone respectively have been sandwiched by draws with Juventus and Roma.
Yesterday’s 3-3 draw with Roma came after initially going 3-0 down. Castagne scored the first goal of the comeback, coincidentally his second goal of the season with the previous coming against Roma in another 3-3 draw back in August.
Celtic were right to be keen. But with Castagne now starring in Atalanta’s current good form any lingering hope of a deal can be put to bed.
