Antonio Rudiger confirms Spurs interest in him last summer

Antonio Rudiger has confirmed that he was close to moving during the last summer transfer window, with Tottenham Hotspur one of the clubs to show interest in him, in comments reported by Football London.

Rudiger’s future was up in the air heading into the summer. As noted by a previous report from The Telegraph, he had been expected to leave Chelsea after last season.

That report claimed that the Germany international rejected a loan move to Spurs.

Of course, Rudiger is now back in the fold at Stamford Bridge. But he has now confirmed that he did indeed consider making the switch to North London.

“Some things I saw coming but then I was not in the squad, I didn’t see that coming but I took it on the chin,” he said, as reported by Football London.

“I was close [to leaving] there were two teams that maybe one I was considering was PSG and then there was Mourinho.”

Rudiger has been hugely impressive in recent weeks. Spurs however, may not feel that they lost out too much by not managing to complete a deal for the 28-year-old.

Mourinho’s men have conceded just 30 goals in 28 games this season. Only four teams have conceded fewer goals during this campaign in the Premier League.

Rudiger – who earns £100,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – has not always been as convincing as he is currently looking. So there is no guarantee that Spurs would have been any better off with him in their backline.

It is still arguably an area that Tottenham may want to strengthen in the summer. But in players such as Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga, they could already have the foundations in place to build a really impressive backline for the long-term.
