Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has urged his club to challenge the likes of Arsenal and Newcastle United in the transfer market by investing big money ‘every season’.
Spurs have never been the biggest spenders in the Premier League, but they shelled out a lot of money last summer. The North Londoners spent over £150 million (Metro) on new players – about £30 million more than their fierce rivals, Arsenal, who spent £120 million (The Athletic).
Conte wants investment like that ‘every season’ – just like Arsenal’s owners have been sanctioning regularly since 2018.

Antonio Conte wants Tottenham to spend money every season – just like Arsenal
Since Arsene Wenger left Arsenal in the summer of 2018, the Gunners have spent a lot of money.
They forked out £75 million on new signings in 2018 (Football London), £118.5 million in 2019 (talkSPORT), £77.7 million in Covid-hit 2020 (talkSPORT), a club-record £142 million in 2021 (Standard), and as mentioned above, £120 million in the summer of 2022.
Some of the early investment definitely didn’t work out for Arsenal, but their owners continued to back the manager, and Mikel Arteta has now made them one of the best teams in the Premier League.
Conte wants the same at Tottenham. He has urged his club to copy Arsenal and invest in transfers ‘every season’ to be able to become a top side in the Premier League.
The Italian said, as quoted by Football London: “But honestly, I don’t know this [what the club will do in January]. For sure, the life will always be more difficult in the future.
“For sure, Tottenham has to have the challenge with a team like Newcastle, also Arsenal.
“Arsenal in the last three or four years, every season they invest money and now we are talking about a really, really good team with a really good coach, but in England, it will be really, really difficult in the future and I think in every situation the most important thing is to be honest.”

TBR View:
As much as Tottenham fans dislike Arsenal, the Gunners’ transfer strategy over the last two years is a fantastic blueprint for Spurs to follow.
Arteta and Edu decided to ignore the big names and just focus on young players with huge potential. They’ve only brought in players under the age of 26, and they’re all performing brilliantly.
It’s no surprise at all that Conte wants his side to splash the cash as Arsenal have. The Gunners are on top of the Premier League at the moment and look incredibly strong.
Conte has made his plea to the Tottenham board, but whether Daniel Levy will give him the green light remains to be seen.
